Teen Period Advice: 6 Tips For Using Cloth Pads At School
It’s that time of year again – classes have started back up and the school year has kicked off. Have you made the decision to be more “green” this year at school? Cloth pads are one of the easiest ways to make the switch – but how the heck do you handle cloth pads at school? Yikes! Chill – we’ve got this. Here’s 6 tips to help you this school year.
Bring a cute wetbag. Wetbags fill double duty. They give you the ability to safely stash soiled pads while locking in moisture as well as provide you with a cute clutch to carry with you to the bathroom. Walk in confidence!
Bring spares. I always keep a backup handy as you never know when you might need it. On heavy days I typically carry three or four pads with me – I rarely need to use all of them, but at least they’re available if I need them.
Use your locker. Lockers are great for stashing things you don’t want to carry around all day – such as soiled cloth pads and those spare ones we mentioned above.
Change often. Cloth pads come in a variety of sizes, fortunately. Everything from light liners toheavy pads are available. That said – try to avoid going too long between changing. You don’t want your pad to feel too heavy or full. This increases the risk of accidents.
Sensitive skin? Opt for organic cloth pads. Organic cloth pads are often made using high quality fabric for a softer feel without the harmful chemicals traditional fabric is exposed to during the bleaching and dyeing process.
Try these tips for public restroom use. Don’t have the ability to use a private restroom during changes? No problem! Take a look at our recent article on handling cloth pads when out and about.
Embrace it! We bleed – it happens. It’s a perfectly normal function. I know, this is one of those things easily said but not so easy to do. I can tell you first hand it’s really not as bad as you may think – how you react is really what determines the level of embarrassment you feel. I once had a clean cloth pad fall out of my purse in front of group of about 5 people. While everyone stared at this foreign object folded up neatly in a square, I quickly scooped it up and maintained my composure (while inside I was turning a bright red color). I explained it was a cloth pad and that was it. Truthfully, no one cringed. In fact, several were curious.
