My First SckoonCup
A menstrual cup is a silicone or latex cup worn inside the vagina during menstruation to collect menstrual fluid. Unlike a tampon which absorbs the blood along with the vagina's natural secretions, a menstrual cup simply holds the fluids until you remove it. Because a menstrual cup has never been linked to Toxic Shock Syndrome, women are putting their concern for health to the forefront by purchasing this ground-breaking alternative. Also, it does not affect vaginal moisture, making it a perfect alternative or supplement to tampons or pads.
- With all benefits of menstrual cup, why haven't I heard of it?
Although menstrual cups have been around since the 1930s, they are still unfamiliar to many American women, but are more popular and well-known in the European market, and around the world. As more women explore new options for their periods, and become increasingly aware of the impact of disposable menstrual pads and tampons on their bodies (and on the environment), we expect in the future, you’ll hear lots more about menstrual cups.
- Why SckoonCup is healthier than tampons?
The vagina is self-cleansing and continually producing fluid that “flushes” the vagina. Tampons absorb this protective fluid and can disrupt the normal acidic vaginal environment. SckoonCup is made of FDA approved medical grade silicon, and it doesn’t absorb this fluid, therefore it won’t cause the dryness you may have experienced with tampons.
- It looks big. Is it comfortable?
You may be surprised to know that once SckoonCup is inserted and fully open, it’s not much larger than a tampon which has absorbed fluid. Because it’s folded flat while being inserted, the size should not be an issue. Our high-grade silicone is exceptionally soft, too, making it flexible, and when inserted correctly, most women are not even aware of it.
- I have really heavy periods. Can I use SckoonCup?
Yes, SckoonCup works very well for heavy periods because it collects two and half to four times more menstrual blood than tampons. This means that you will need to attend to the SckoonCup less often.
- Isn't using SckoonCup messy?
Once you take the time to learn about SckoonCup, and actually try it for yourself, you will be pleasantly surprised how clean it is to use. You’ll probably come into contact with the same amount of blood you might while inserting a tampon. When it’s time to remove it, the part you touch will be relatively clean. After removal, simply tip the contents into the toilet. While the idea may sound messy, we think you’ll be pleased to find out it’s really not at all.
- Comparing to my tampons, how much more/less does SckoonCup hold?
SckoonCup size 1 can hold two and half to four times more absorbency than a regular size tampon. Therefore SckoonCup can be worn up to 12 hours; however, for a hygiene purpose, we recommend removal and cleaning of the cup at least 2 -3 times a day.
- Can I bathe/shower or swim with SckoonCup inserted?
Yes you can!
- Does SckoonCup cause odor?
There is no odor with SckoonCup because the menstrual flow is not exposed to air. Therefore, it does not oxidize to cause embarrassing odors. You can feel clean and secure all the time!
- How about discoloration?
To avoid discoloration, your SckoonCup should always first be rinsed in cold water. Afterwards, clean the cup with warm water and unscented, mild soap.
- Does it leak?
Consumer research indicates that 60% of women experience leakage every month when using tampons and pads. SckoonCup gives more reliable protection than tampons, because if inserted correctly, it won’t leak. You may need little practice though, so don’t be discouraged if it leaks at first. Click here to see our Insertion Guide for more information. If you are experiencing leaks, refer to the “What if it leaks?” under “Help!”
